Sounds like it's the APU Cone / Muffler.

More likely, the exhaust cone from an engine. It's about the right size. APU's don't have exhaust cones.

There is a cone that covers the apu in the tail of large passenger jets like the one described.

I'm an aircraft designer. The APUs on newer aircraft do have a muffler. It's a coned shaped piece of titanium. Depending on the aircraft they are 2 - 4 feet long.

You all would be very surprised at how many pieces fall of aircraft.

As an airframe mechanic I see all kinds of missing bits of sheet metal

I'm more amazed that the residents called authorities - unless they witnessed it fall?!

If I found something that size in my front yard, I would just assume someone dumped it there!

Good for them, and glad no one was injured.

It was a titanium strip that fell off the engine of a Continental DC-10 that contributed to the crash of Concorde in Paris a few years back. Parts falling off of planes may sound comic (not unlike my first car!) but it is a very serious safety issue. Hope they can identifty the part and trace it back.

Um, the article said what part it was and that they noticed it missing when they landed, so...they already know.

Each passenger should send Delta a bill for not providing a total airplane to fly on. A "Fee for a fee" seems fair to me.

Not surprising at all. We recently recovered a fairly large piece of an external equipment access cover that fell from a USMC Osprey tilt rotor aircraft that was flying off the coast here in the North Carolina southern outer banks area. The component washed up on the beach in our community and was returned to the military. This is kinda scary for a guy like me who served in the U.S. Air Force and was always mindful that failing to secure and double check what I worked on would surely be rewarded with a court martial and a less than honorable discharge. That was back in the Viet Nam era, though. Maybe things have changed since then.

At first it was assumed to be the 2-year old brat from the SouthWest airplane. But the brat and his psycho mom had been kicked off SW.

Where was the maintenance done? Outsourced to the lowest bidder as usual?
