Isn't MD88 just a fancy name for DC9? Don't they belong in some avaition museum along side the DC3 and the fokker tri-wing? Just flew on one in Italy. Thought I was being transported (flown) back to the '70s. Was surpised an engine didn't fall off.

Oh no, no, no...they call them "Super 80" now...it's a whole new plane, no resemblance to the antique DC-9s at all...hey, wanna buy some oceanfront property in Arizona?

    :)

That's like saying a 747-800 is just a 747, or an MD-11 is just a DC-10. The MD-80 is longer, has more powerful engines, different wing, avionics, and other systems.

The MD-80 is also a great plane with an incredible safety record. It also has a nicer ride than a 737 or Airbus since the fuselage mounted engines don't disrupt airflow over the wings (ideal aircraft design). If you've ever sat in the first couple of rows, it's so quiet you can hear the altitude callouts from the cockpit during approach!

Yea I was just kidding. They're not so bad (MD88).

Isn't Delta the same airline that 'lost' part of their plane last week? YES!

I guess there will be a new fee for Delta....the parachute fee!

Some went to freightlines and many went overseas/other countries (MD-80 will probably share a similiar fate). Another great plane. Flew one recently from Chile to Bolivia. Noisy though.

              Simpler Man:

              Whatever happended to the 727's?

The 727's and other aircraft of their ilk went into freight service because they contained a flight engineer's seat in the cockpit and the airlines did not want to pay a third cockpit crew salary.

From my understanding American Airlines almost cancelled their purchase of Boeing 767's way back when because they originally came with a flight engineer's seat.
