One good thing is the more this happens the faster these floating septic systems will be taken off the beautiful oceans. People get upset if their dog takes a crap in the house but feel nothing when all their crap lands in the living areas of the oceans inhabitants.
And the local authorities are quick to collect fines for those who don't pick up their doggy turds, but think nothing of eating human feces happily strained through local bottom feeders, crab, shellfish, lobster, et cetera. Apparently it's the particular flavor of the local feces that adds charm to indigineous bottom feeders. Dump them toilets in the bay and have a few shellfish.
Nothing from any of these cruise ships ever gets put intentionally into the ocean.
Must be fun spending a week with your head in the toilet and paying for it at the same time ! Why would anyone go on one of these cruises with the track record they have ?

The Celebrity line in general usually receives high scores when it comes to the CDC inspections. However, I do agree that if I were about to embark on the Mercury, I'd have serious reservations. I'm sure they'd never do it, but maybe it's time to cancel the next few sailings and drydock her to to have the extra time to sanitize properly. I'm also sure a fair percentage of those getting sick must be crew-keep them off of the ship for a few weeks as well. No doubt they dont have homes in the area, but I'm sure the line could figure out how to accomodate them comfortably while they recouperate. Its definately a black mark on the beautiful ship,which I sailed about 10 years ago.
They pay good money in Beverly Hills for those high colonics, and this is a side benefit on a cruise too!

Sounds like the celebrity line would be a good one to steer clear of - unless of course one enjoys feeling miserable and spending their vacation in the toilet.
Let's be real ocean cruises are for people who love to stuff their faces with food. Getting sick and "barfing" all that ice cream you can eat is not so much fun.

It's high time to stop these cruises and draft a much stricter set of requirements in regards to food handling and the cleanliness of the crew.When you see a video of a crew member taking a crap in a potted palm on board,pulling up his pants and walking off,you know he is a disaster on the hoof. You couldn't pay me enough money to come close to one of these ships,let alone go on a cruise on one.I spent over two years on an aircraft carrier and in that whole time there WAS NOT ONE SINGLE CASE OF FOOD POISONING!!!! So don't tell me it is inevitable to have one or two cases on a seven day cruise. The crew is nothing but a bunch of nasty,filthy germ factories!!!

don't blame sc. don't blame celebrity. as far back as 1998, my husband and i took a cruise to alaska's inside passage. i was so sick, i layed on the floor in my own vomit, etc until i allowed my husband to pick me up off the floor and put me in the shower. he went to the dr on board who said "your wife must be sea sick". i was violently ill for 3 days. on the last day of the cruise, the canadian health dept came on board, asking all of the 300+ that were sick to fill out paperwork on what we ate and drank while at port. and all the cruise line did for me was give me a $100 credit for shopping on my next cruise. 3 weeks later, the canadian health dept finally FORCED the cruise ship to remain docked until it was cleaned stem to stern. it stayed docked in vancouver until that time.
i'd be checking for muslims and illeagle aliens working any place near the food and water supply. what a place for a terrorist to try out viruses on people. imagine paying thousands of dollars for a luxury cruise only to get sick for the week. they could have stayed home and eaten some bad food and been sick.

It is not physically possible to "clean" a cruise ship that has stricken hundreds of travelers with an infectious gastrointestinal virus in a short period of time. If any cruise line says they can - they are lying. No cruise line is going to jeopardize the money spigot. Getting sick or not getting sick is purely the luck of the draw on a cruise.

WOW, don't know how there doing it but when my wife and I went on a cruise to Mexico on Carnival CL in Feb, we darn near had to pass a complete physical before we boarded. Poor person next to us in line had a cough and they sent her to an in-house Dr before she could board. But then again the only people that prayed to the porselin goddess on that trip that I know of had too much at the bar!
Maybe it was a bunch of stinking yankee's leaving the dock after a long hard day of whining about the Confederate flag that caused it.

The passengers are at fault, not the cruise lines. The ships have hand sanitizers EVERYWHERE, especially at the entrance of each restaurant. These do no good, however, if the passengers don't use them! The crew practically begs the passengers to use the sanitizers, but I have watched 35-45% of the people just breeze on past them, completely ignoring the sanitizer bubbles (and the crew member standing next to it). These are probably the same people who don't wash their hands after using the toilet. Whatcha gonna do?

You put that many people that close together and it's an invitation to a disaster week after week after week.
My opinion: Cruises are not a good idea. I wouldn't want to be trapped on a big boat at sea for days at a time. You don't know how clean anything (including the crew) is or where the food has been. No thanks. As it is, I've seen too many people in public bathrooms on land (even near doctors' offices, and health professionals should definitely know better) not wash their hands before returning to work, even food handlers.

I feel it is VERY IMPORTANT that the cruise line let future cruisers know whether the medical treatments related to the virus will be paid for by the cruise line or whether or not it will be left up to the passengers, insured or not. After all, it's not the fault of the passengers. Having been relegated to the ship's hospital on two occasions, the charges for treatment become quite expensive.
I truthfully do not understand WHY people continue to go on these floating desease infested toilets....And they actually PAY to get sick.This has been going on long enough, that you think people might LEARN something from it. I also question the so called "missing people" that are never found on these floating ships of bacteria...
It might be a good idea to use more powerful cleaning solutions and to maybe go through the crew quarters and see if they find anything that could be used to infect the ship. Why do none of the crew get sick? Maybe they are passing the bug around on purpose. It has happened before.

why is it that aircraft carriers never have this problem....think it has to do with being clean ALL the time?? You cannot take decorative pillows, bedspreads,carpet, and sanitize them enough to stop desease....gesh, stop going on these cruises to desease...
The Celebrity Mercury is a jinxed ship. Period. It should be sunk and used for divers . . . I took a cruise on the ship that was the nightmare from hell. Bleach was sprayed 24/7, the ship was a bleached mess, no respect for passengers with breathing issues, crew was rude, clothes were ruined, etc. etc. etc. All I hear about the Mercury is negative things. It honestly should be sunk. Wake up Celebrity.
